Year-End Highlights from the SFMTA Photo Archive By Jeremy Menzies As we approach the close of 2019, here's a short "year in review" of our favorite history blog posts of the year. So climb aboard and have your ticket to the past ready, 'cause this trip back in time is about to depart! First on this year's list is our celebration of the 80th anniversary of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition   on Treasure Island. We unveiled dozens of beautiful large-format photos of the GGIE in our February post. A view of Treasure Island and the Golden Gate International Exposition from Yerba Buena Island circa 1939. The "Tower of the Sun" and other fairground buildings were transformed at night into canvases for intensely colorful light displays. Following the GGIE up in March was our post on historic Muni women in celebration of Women's History Month. Muni's first female inspector, Evelyn Wells, monitors a bus line in this 1979 shot. Ap

Shopping Downtown This Holiday Season?

Shopping Downtown This Holiday Season? By Pamela Johnson To improve your shopping experience and enhance safety, the Ellis-O’Farrell and Union Square garages have recently completed significant operational upgrades…just in time for the holiday rush ! These garages are two of the 22 City-owned parking facilities slated to receive the Parking Access Revenue Control Systems (PARCS) upgrades.  This program is replacing 16-year old parking equipment with modern-day parking technology. The upgrades include new arms and barrier gates, with flashing lights and audible alarms, as vehicles exit the garage, and a license plate recognition system (LPR) that will resolve issues with lost tickets. As a transit-first city, the SFMTA always encourages people to ride public transit, walk or bike to their destination. However, we know that sometimes this isn’t practical and that some people will choose to drive. To accommodate this, we would like to remind holiday shoppers about their parking o

Tips For Parking In San Francisco This Holiday Season

चित्र
Tips For Parking In San Francisco This Holiday Season By Pamela Johnson Whether you are a long-time resident or visitor coming to San Francisco for the holidays, we encourage you to take the train, bus, walk, ride a bike or take a taxi.  If you need to drive, the SFMTA would like for you to have a great parking experience. Here are tips for parking on the street at one of our meters or in one of our city-owned parking garages. Parking on the Street Park Smart! If you love it, don’t leave it. To avoid having your vehicle broken into, keep all items/valuables out of plain view; better yet, take them with you upon exiting your vehicle. Visit the SFMTA webpage so you know the parking meter rates. Download the Pay-by-Phone App so you can pay for your parking online. You can extend your parking time at a parking meter with the  Pay-by-Phone App so you don’t have to return to the meter to pay. You can pay by credit card, with Google or Apple Pay. Next Steps of the Scooter Program

चित्र
Next Steps of the Scooter Program By At the SFMTA, we are excited to expand the range of sustainable transportation options in San Francisco, including scooters, which provide a convenient, on-demand travel option for shorter trips and an alternative to driving. Based on their positive performance to date, we recently increased the number of scooters permitted through the Powered Scooter Share Permit Pilot Program . This timing presents an opportunity to again share how we can keep scooter riders and pedestrians safe when it comes to scootering around San Francisco. Since we launched the scooter program, we have taken steps to ensure public safety for both riders and others on the street. One of the most common community concerns is related to scooters riding on the sidewalk, which is against the law in California. To ensure that our sidewalks are safe for everyone, we have taken proactive steps to address this issue with the four permitted scooter companies currently operating

Heads Up: Fix On The Way For Two-Car Trains

चित्र
Heads Up: Fix On The Way For Two-Car Trains By We want to inform our riders about a recent issue that arose on one of our new LRV4 Siemens vehicles. While Muni LRVs remain safe to operate, out of an abundance of caution, we will be limiting the number of two-car trains in service for the near future. We’re taking this opportunity to explain some of the history and what our plans are to fix the problem. Last April, our two-car trains started to experience complications with their couplers. Couplers are a train component that allow multiple vehicles to operate under the control of one operator. Upon inspection, we found broken shear pins that were a symptom of a design flaw within the coupler. To fix this, we replaced the old pins and the couplers began working properly. Since the April 2019 coupler issue on our LRV4 trains, Siemens has continued its investigation into the cause of those failures. On Monday, we received word from Siemens about ongoing and unexplained fatiguing, (m

Take Our New Shared Rides Survey

चित्र
Take Our New Shared Rides Survey By Bradley Dunn During World War II and the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, carpooling or sharing rides was a strategy for maximizing a scarce resource, gas.  While our vehicles have become more fuel-efficient including the introduction of hybrid and electric cars, Today, the scarce resource is street space. Shared rides are one way the SFMTA is working to make our system function more efficiently. We want to hear from you in a new survey about carpooling and shared rides in the city. As San Francisco continues to grow, moving more people in fewer vehicles will maximize the efficiency and sustainability of our transportation system. While the percentage of people traveling by private automobile in San Francisco has declined in recent years, about two-thirds of these private automobile trips are carrying only one person. Furthermore, between 2010 and 2016, the total Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) in the city has increased by 13 percent, according to an anal

Octavia ‘Open Street’ Project in Hayes Valley

चित्र
Octavia ‘Open Street’ Project in Hayes Valley By Yesterday, the SFMTA working with Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Brown announced the completion of the Octavia ‘Open Street’ Project in Hayes Valley. The Open Street Project was designed to reopen a portion of Octavia Street as public space to be enjoyed by the neighborhood and community.  The project is part of the Octavia Boulevard Enhancement Program, which seeks to make the boulevard and surrounding streets safer, more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, and supportive of the needs of the Hayes Valley community. The ‘Open Street’ Project provides an extension of public space at Patricia’s Green by closing off the block of Octavia between Hayes and Linden to vehicle traffic. In addition to the ‘Open Street’ portion, the project includes safety improvements such as shorter pedestrian crossings and improved intersection visibility. The redesigned street will also allow bicycles to make a safe, protected connection from South of Mar

In Honor of Rosa Parks on the Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott By Erica Kato Today, we unveiled a plaque in honor of Rosa Parks on the anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott was sparked by Rosa Parks keeping her historic seat, and we wanted to commemorate that spirit here in San Francisco. District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton joined us at one of our bus yards for the event. Later in the day, the bus headed out to serve customers on the 19 Polk Line, which is a line on part of our Muni Equity Strategy . The Muni Service Equity Strategy is one component of the agency's commitment to make transit accessible and affordable to all of our customers. Everything you need to know about red transit lanes

चित्र
Everything you need to know about red transit lanes By Amy Fowler San Francisco’s transit lanes are nothing new, but you may have seen more of them lately. They’ve been a part of the city’s transit system for over 40 years , and today San Francisco has more than 43 miles of these dedicated transit lanes, which are critical to helping Muni move our growing population. Since Muni began painting them red in 2013, they’ve become even more visible throughout the city. Just got a transit lane in your neighborhood or Muni line? We’ve got the scoop on what you need to know. What are transit lanes? Transit lanes are lanes that are dedicated to Muni vehicles and other buses. Taxis are also allowed to use most transit lanes, but not app-based rail hail services such as Lyft and Uber. Along with other Muni Forward improvements, transit lanes help improve travel time and reliability on Muni buses and trains and protect transit riders from growing traffic congestion. First Of Ten Public Artworks Installed For Central Subway By The SFMTA, working with the San Francisco Arts Commission is excited to announce that the first of ten permanent public artworks for the Central Subway Public Art Program has been installed. Microcosmic, by Bay Area-based artist Moto Ohtake, is a wind-activated kinetic sculpture mounted on a 40-foot light pole at the 4th and Brannan Street Platform Station, right before the train goes underground. Fabricated from stainless steel, the sculpture measures approximately 15 feet by 15 feet by 3 feet when stretched to its full capacity. The sculpture’s wings move in gyroscopic circular motions and are angled differently to create opposing rotations under the same wind conditions, allowing viewers to experience an infinite number of combinations in response to changes in weather patterns. The movements will be contemplative at times, and more dynamic and energetic at others based on the wind. Ohtake’s Microcosmic, is also a culm

Our Routes' Roots: History of the 33 Ashbury/18th

चित्र
Our Routes' Roots: History of the 33 Ashbury/18th By Jeremy Menzies Celebrating its 84th anniversary in October, the 33 Ashbury/18th descends from one of the very first electric streetcar lines and holds the distinction of being San Francisco's first electric trolley bus route. While many of Muni's 71 bus routes have similar origins, only the 33 Ashbury/18th can claim this unique honor. A streetcar on the 18th & Park Line uses the unique "switchback" at Market and Clayton Streets in this 1915 shot. The exact path of the route has changed over the years but the core of the line's path up Twin Peaks and Clayton Street traces its lineage back to 1892 and the opening of San Francisco's second electric streetcar line.  This line, called the 18th and Park, was operated by the San Francisco & San Mateo Electric Railway Company and followed a 5-mile route from 3rd & Harrison Streets to Golden Gate Park via South of Market, the Mission, Twin Pea

This Morning’s Commute

चित्र
This Morning’s Commute By Monday morning at 8:18 am , Muni customers experienc ed a major delay in the subway. Maintenance crews isolated the problem and power was restored at 11:28 a.m. after testing was completed. Crews will continue working on the problem tonight to better understand the underlying causes and take corrective action to prevent the conditions that led to the outage in the first place. We understand that Muni customers rely on us to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit service and apologize for the major inconvenience this morning. We wanted to share our response to today’s incident, and update our customers on what we’re working on moving forward. We’re working hard to ensure a system that is dependable and that you can count on. An electrical circuit that feeds power to the K,L and M lines just east of Forest Hill stations failed, disabling inbound trains and slowing the Monday morning commute. Outbound service was not affected by the electrical problem.

Bike Rack Effort Ramps Up in Tandem with Safety

Bike Rack Effort Ramps Up in Tandem with Safety By On Monday, SFMTA staff installed a new bike corral at the corner of Sanchez and 16th Street in an existing red zone, with the support of Supervisor Mandelman. This corral is part of a city-wide commitment to expand bike parking, and an effort to assess how bike racks can help to supplement pedestrian safety efforts like daylighting at intersections. “We’re hard at work to make it easier and safer for people to get out of cars and onto bikes or scooters instead,” said Mayor London N. Breed. “The installation of this new bike corral will add much-needed bike and scooter parking, while also supporting pedestrian safety. I’m looking forward to seeing more corrals installed throughout the city.” With more emerging mobility options, like scootershare and bikeshare, along with a general increase in bicycling, demand for racks is growing. Stationless permits include a rack fee based on operator fleet sizes. These funds are going towards l
