In this week’s Director’s Report from the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Tom Maguire gave updates on the following topics:
Vision Zero
- We are sad to report that, so far this year, there have been 26 confirmed VZ fatalities, up from 23 for all of 2018. This includes:
- 16 pedestrians (includes 1 person riding a skateboard)
- 6 people driving vehicles
- 2 passengers riding in motor vehicles
- 1 bicyclist
- 1 motorcyclist
Muni Service Disruptions
- On Monday (Nov 25) at approximately 11 am, an overhead wire broke and became tangled in a train pantograph. This happened at the inbound Ferry Portal and cut power to the Embarcadero platform and the Embarcadero crossover.
- On Tuesday (Nov 26) at approximately 7 pm, a disoriented senior driver drove into the West Portal tunnel past the Forest Hill Station.
- Also, on Tuesday, November 26, we experienced flooding at the Church Station, which caused additional delays.
Muni Working Group
- The group is sponsored by Mayor Breed, Supervisor Peskin and Supervisor Mandelman and co-chaired by Director Gwyneth Borden and Ed Harrington. It also includes industry experts and transportation advocates.
- For the past several months, four subcommittees have been meeting regularly to generate recommendations. They also collected feedback at the SFMTA and TA Board meetings.
Bay Wheels
- Bay Wheels is scheduled to re-launch e-bikes in San Francisco in mid-December but has not provided a specific date.
Muni Fare Increases
- On January 1st scheduled fare increases will go into effect.
- The increase applies exclusively to Single Ride Cable Car and Visitor Passports. Since Ride Cable Care and 1-Day Visitor Passports will increase by $1. 3 and 7- Day Passports will increase by $2.
Free Muni On News Years Eve
- Once again, this year, the SFMTA will offer free transit service between 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
- We want to encourage people to celebrate the new year safely. Riding transit is the safest way to do that and we are happy to provide this free transit service as part of our ongoing commitment to Vision Zero.
Our Board of Directors meeting is usually held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. To watch the meeting in full, go to SFGovTV.

The Future of Transit Service Through the Health and Budget Crisis
The Future of Transit Service Through the Health and Budget Crisis By Jeffrey Tumlin The pandemic has upended every aspect of our society, and the SFMTA is no exception. The COVID-related health and financial crises have resulted in deep and painful cuts to Muni service. We will be draining our fund reserve and spending one-time money just to sustain the service we have. Absent new outside funding, we fall off a financial cliff in 2023, just as the city needs us the most to support its economic recovery. As your Director of Transportation, I want to be open and transparent about how we got here and what it means for you. When I took this job six months ago, our mobility systems were strong but inefficient, the result of too many years of avoiding hard or politically unpopular choices. This crisis has now forced us to make those hard choices. It has also demonstrated the SFMTA workforce’s depth of talent and creativity, and its capacity for collaboration and strategic risk-taking. Valencia Street and Grant Street: The first two “Shared Spaces” Street Closures
Valencia Street and Grant Street: The first two “Shared Spaces” Street Closures By Phillip Pierce To expand public space for physically distanced outdoor dining, retail and mobility, the city’s Shared Spaces program will close parts of Valencia Street to traffic starting this week. This temporary repurposing of Valencia Street from Thursdays to Sundays is similar to another zone created on Grant Street in Chinatown on weekends. Valencia and Grant streets are the first two full street closures in the Shared Spaces program, initiated by Mayor Breed to support the economic and social recovery of neighborhood businesses. a Mano restaurant in Hayes Valley using the area in front of their restaurant as a Shared Space.
