June 10 Muni Service Changes Adds Service on Connector Routes By Clive Tsuma The 38R Geary Rapid will run every 6 minutes starting June 10 Starting Saturday, June 10, the SFMTA will be adding Muni service on several lines to address crowding, wait times and to support increased summer tourism. We’re also making some stop changes to serve more customers and make the service more accessible and reliable.  Increased Service  To address crowding and reduce pass-ups, we’re adding service on the 1 California between Clay and Drumm streets and California Street and Presidio Avenue – where demand is highest – on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  We’re also going to be starting service earlier on the 1X California Express, at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., in response to customer feedback, as well as adding stops at Cherry, Spruce and Laurel streets and Presidio Avenue.   We’re also extending the evening service to the Presidio at 30 Stockton seven days a week. So climb aboard and have your ticket to the past ready, 'cause this trip back in time is about to depart! First on this year's list is our celebration of the 80th anniversary of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition   on Treasure Island. We unveiled dozens of beautiful large-format photos of the GGIE in our February post. A view of Treasure Island and the Golden Gate International Exposition from Yerba Buena Island circa 1939. The "Tower of the Sun" and other fairground buildings were transformed at night into canvases for intensely colorful light displays. Season's Greetings and Schedule By As the festive season is now upon us and the new year is fast approaching, we wish you and yours a festive and safe holiday. In 2019 we realized some significant milestones, from expanding our light-rail fleet to greatly improving our bicycle network. And we continue to work on implementing improvements to our service. Our blog strives to help you get the information you need to be involved and to make your voices heard. Each year, we take this opportunity to thank our readers and commenters for their support. Thank you! Over the next couple of weeks, Moving SF will publish on a lighter schedule.  Muni will also adjust its schedule   around the Christmas and New Year holidays. Christmas and New Year's days are two of the three days of the year when meters are not enforced. By Pamela Johnson To improve your shopping experience and enhance safety, the Ellis-O’Farrell and Union Square garages have recently completed significant operational upgrades…just in time for the holiday rush ! These garages are two of the 22 City-owned parking facilities slated to receive the Parking Access Revenue Control Systems (PARCS) upgrades.  This program is replacing 16-year old parking equipment with modern-day parking technology. The upgrades include new arms and barrier gates, with flashing lights and audible alarms, as vehicles exit the garage, and a license plate recognition system (LPR) that will resolve issues with lost tickets. As a transit-first city, the SFMTA always encourages people to ride public transit, walk or bike to their destination. Ride Muni Free on New Year’s Eve By 2019 marks the 20th consecutive year that we will offer free rides on New Year’s Eve. Starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31 and going through 5 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1 all trips on Muni are free. This program supports San Francisco’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities. Ride Muni Free New Year’s Eve includes all Muni lines and routes. All information, including schedules and stops, will be posted on our webpage . Clipper Card customers should NOT tap their cards to make sure they don’t get charged a fare. Muni Mobile passes will not be necessary. Metro fare gates will be open that night. Don’t drink and drive, let Muni do the driving. New Year’s Eve Muni Service: Complimentary Muni service from 8 p.m. on Tuesday , December 31 to 5 a.m. on Wednesday , January 1. Holiday Weekend: Russian Bells and Salesforce Winterfest By Schad Dalton Holiday Parking and Street Sweeping Enforcement  Schedule Reminder: Parking Enforcement will not be issuing parking tickets for hour limits in residential permit areas, M-F daytime and 7-day night street sweeping or tow cars in commuter tow-away zones on Christmas Day or on New Year's Day. Christmas and New Year's Day begin on midnight of December 25 and January 1 respectively. Muni Holiday Schedule Change Reminder: Beginning December 24th through the 29th, with the exception of the 8AX-Bayshore Express, 8BX-Bayshore Express, and 76X Marin Headlands Express routes there will be no Express service. Tips For Parking In San Francisco This Holiday Season By Pamela Johnson Whether you are a long-time resident or visitor coming to San Francisco for the holidays, we encourage you to take the train, bus, walk, ride a bike or take a taxi.  If you need to drive, the SFMTA would like for you to have a great parking experience. Here are tips for parking on the street at one of our meters or in one of our city-owned parking garages. Parking on the Street Park Smart! If you love it, don’t leave it. To avoid having your vehicle broken into, keep all items/valuables out of plain view; better yet, take them with you upon exiting your vehicle. Visit the SFMTA webpage so you know the parking meter rates. Download the Pay-by-Phone App so you can pay for your parking online. You can extend your parking time at a parking meter with the  Pay-by-Phone App so you don’t have to return to the meter to pay. You can pay by credit card, with Google or Apple Pay. Do not park on the sidewalk

Next Steps of the Scooter Program By At the SFMTA, we are excited to expand the range of sustainable transportation options in San Francisco, including scooters, which provide a convenient, on-demand travel option for shorter trips and an alternative to driving. Based on their positive performance to date, we recently increased the number of scooters permitted through the Powered Scooter Share Permit Pilot Program . This timing presents an opportunity to again share how we can keep scooter riders and pedestrians safe when it comes to scootering around San Francisco. Since we launched the scooter program, we have taken steps to ensure public safety for both riders and others on the street. One of the most common community concerns is related to scooters riding on the sidewalk, which is against the law in California. To ensure that our sidewalks are safe for everyone, we have taken proactive steps to address this issue with the four permitted scooter companies currently operating

This Weekend: Holiday Lighted Boat Parade and Parol Lantern Festival By Schad Dalton Events:  A handful of fun events will be taking place around town this weekend beginning with the annual Holiday Lights Boat Parade along Fisherman's Wharf this Friday evening. Also beginning Friday with shows throughout the weekend, the Circus Center Winter Showcase will take audiences on a journey through dark and light with aerialists, acrobats and much more. Heads Up: Fix On The Way For Two-Car Trains By We want to inform our riders about a recent issue that arose on one of our new LRV4 Siemens vehicles. While Muni LRVs remain safe to operate, out of an abundance of caution, we will be limiting the number of two-car trains in service for the near future. We’re taking this opportunity to explain some of the history and what our plans are to fix the problem. Last April, our two-car trains started to experience complications with their couplers. Couplers are a train component that allow multiple vehicles to operate under the control of one operator. Upon inspection, we found broken shear pins that were a symptom of a design flaw within the coupler. To fix this, we replaced the old pins and the couplers began working properly. Since the April 2019 coupler issue on our LRV4 trains, Siemens has continued its investigation into the cause of those failures. Take Our New Shared Rides Survey By Bradley Dunn During World War II and the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, carpooling or sharing rides was a strategy for maximizing a scarce resource, gas.  While our vehicles have become more fuel-efficient including the introduction of hybrid and electric cars, Today, the scarce resource is street space. Shared rides are one way the SFMTA is working to make our system function more efficiently. We want to hear from you in a new survey about carpooling and shared rides in the city. As San Francisco continues to grow, moving more people in fewer vehicles will maximize the efficiency and sustainability of our transportation system. While the percentage of people traveling by private automobile in San Francisco has declined in recent years, about two-thirds of these private automobile trips are carrying only one person. Furthermore, between 2010 and 2016, the total Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) in the city has increased by 13 percent, according to an anal

Octavia ‘Open Street’ Project in Hayes Valley By Yesterday, the SFMTA working with Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Brown announced the completion of the Octavia ‘Open Street’ Project in Hayes Valley. The Open Street Project was designed to reopen a portion of Octavia Street as public space to be enjoyed by the neighborhood and community.  The project is part of the Octavia Boulevard Enhancement Program, which seeks to make the boulevard and surrounding streets safer, more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly, and supportive of the needs of the Hayes Valley community. The ‘Open Street’ Project provides an extension of public space at Patricia’s Green by closing off the block of Octavia between Hayes and Linden to vehicle traffic. In addition to the ‘Open Street’ portion, the project includes safety improvements such as shorter pedestrian crossings and improved intersection visibility. Director of Transportation Report: December 3, 2019 By In this week’s Director’s Report from the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Tom Maguire gave updates on the following topics: Vision Zero We are sad to report that, so far this year, there have been 26 confirmed VZ fatalities, up from 23 for all of 2018. This includes: 16 pedestrians (includes 1 person riding a skateboard) 6 people driving vehicles 2 passengers riding in motor vehicles 1 bicyclist 1 motorcyclist Muni Service Disruptions ​​​​​​​ On Monday (Nov 25) at approximately 11 am, an overhead wire broke and became tangled in a train pantograph. This happened at the inbound Ferry Portal and cut power to the Embarcadero platform and the Embarcadero crossover. On Tuesday (Nov 26) at approximately 7 pm, a disoriented senior driver drove into the West Portal tunnel past the Forest Hill Station. Also, on Tuesday, November 26, we experienced flooding at the Church Station, which caused additional delays. Muni

Cable Car and Passport Fare Changes Beginning January 1 By Kharima Mohamed Beginning in the new year, our Cable Car and Passport customers will see a new fare increase. Tickets for our Single Ride Cable Car will increase by $1. Prior to that, Cable Car tickets have not changed since 2015. One Day Passports will increase by $1 while Three Day and Seven Day Passports will increase by $2. These fare changes will apply to Clipper Card and MuniMobile users as well as in-person sales. These fare changes are crucial to running and improving San Francisco’s transportation system. They will ensure that our system will continue to deliver safe and reliable service. The SFMTA strives to make Muni as accessible and equitable as possible. While making adjustments to some fares, the SFMTA Board of Directors have also approved the following fare types that allow those who qualify to travel at deeply reduced rates or for free: discounted fares for all seniors, youth and people with disabilities; F

In Honor of Rosa Parks on the Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott By Erica Kato Today, we unveiled a plaque in honor of Rosa Parks on the anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott was sparked by Rosa Parks keeping her historic seat, and we wanted to commemorate that spirit here in San Francisco. District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton joined us at one of our bus yards for the event. Later in the day, the bus headed out to serve customers on the 19 Polk Line, which is a line on part of our Muni Equity Strategy . The Muni Service Equity Strategy is one component of the agency's commitment to make transit accessible and affordable to all of our customers. The Muni Service Equity Strategy focuses on improving transit performance in San Francisco neighborhoods with high percentages of households with low incomes and people of color. The neighborhoods were selected based on the percentage of households with low incomes, private vehicle ownership, race and ethnicity

This Weekend: Brave the Bay and Bazaar Stock Music Fest By Schad Dalton Events:   The north side of the city will host several unique events throughout this coming weekend. The Italian Christmas Market will open at the Fort Mason Center and last throughout the weekend. Right next door in Aquatic Park, teams will compete in various athletic challenges during Brave the Bay on Saturday. Check out the Bazaar Stock Music Festival in the Richmond as dozens of local artists perform over the course of 12 hours.
