June 10 Muni Service Changes Adds Service on Connector Routes By Clive Tsuma The 38R Geary Rapid will run every 6 minutes starting June 10 Starting Saturday, June 10, the SFMTA will be adding Muni service on several lines to address crowding, wait times and to support increased summer tourism. We’re also making some stop changes to serve more customers and make the service more accessible and reliable. Increased Service To address crowding and reduce pass-ups, we’re adding service on the 1 California between Clay and Drumm streets and California Street and Presidio Avenue – where demand is highest – on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We’re also going to be starting service earlier on the 1X California Express, at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., in response to customer feedback, as well as adding stops at Cherry, Spruce and Laurel streets and Presidio Avenue. Whether you are a long-time resident or visitor coming to San Francisco for the holidays, we encourage you to take the train, bus, walk, ride a bike or take a taxi. If you need to drive, the SFMTA would like for you to have a great parking experience.
Here are tips for parking on the street at one of our meters or in one of our city-owned parking garages.
Parking on the Street
- Park Smart! If you love it, don’t leave it. To avoid having your vehicle broken into, keep all items/valuables out of plain view; better yet, take them with you upon exiting your vehicle.
- Visit the SFMTA webpage so you know the parking meter rates.
- Download the Pay-by-Phone App so you can pay for your parking online.
- You can extend your parking time at a parking meter with the Pay-by-Phone App so you don’t have to return to the meter to pay. You can pay by credit card, with Google or Apple Pay.
- Do not park on the sidewalk—this blocks the path of people walking or using wheelchairs or strollers, and isn’t safe. Your vehicle may be ticketed and/or towed.
Parking Off-Street in Garages & Lots
- Reminder: Avoid having your vehicle broken into, keep all valuables out of sight or take them with you when you exit your vehicle.
- Park in one of our city-owned garages or lots. Ours are typically 50 to 60 percent less expensive than parking in a privately-owned garage or at a meter. Visit the SFMTA webpage so you know the rates.
- If you are concerned about your surroundings and would like an escort to your car, please feel free to use the Ambassador Service in our city-owned garages.
- Take notice of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious, please report it.
- Look both ways for pedestrians when driving into or out of a garage or lot.
More information about San Francisco parking rules can be found in the Drive & Park section of our webpage.
Happy holidays from the SFMTA.

Making the JFK Drive Promenade a Space for All
Making the JFK Drive Promenade a Space for All By Eillie Anzilotti The JFK Drive Promenade is a place for all—and its new signage reflects that! Starting January 5, 2022 you’ll find new signage all along the promenade route reminding users to be kind, share the space, move slowly, and say hello to each other. Through over 50 outreach events held by the Golden Gate Park Access & Safety Program team throughout the fall and over 10,000 survey responses we received, San Franciscans have overwhelmingly said they appreciate the space for walking and rolling along JFK Drive—but also want to see more guidance on how to use the space. In response, the SF Recreation & Park Department and SFMTA co-designed this courtesy campaign to encourage park users to put safety and kindness first when navigating the promenade. A simple reminder to go slow and say hello can go a long way!...

New Muni Metro Station Opens in the Heart of Union Square By Mariana Maguire Central Subway special weekend service will be running just in time for the holiday lights at Union Square The new Central Subway Union Square/Market Street Station puts Muni customers in the heart of historic San Francisco, beneath Union Square Plaza at Geary and Stockton streets – open just in time to enjoy Macy’s famous holiday window displays and ice skating on the plaza. Surrounding the Square, visitors can access world-class shopping from some of the most coveted names in fashion and jewelry. Travelers will be steps away from several big-name and boutique hotels. Quaint locally owned cafes, delis, restaurants and bars nearby offer a wide variety of cuisine from Asian to French to Irish, and beyond! Barbary Coast Trail markers on the sidewalk will lead you on an odyssey through old San Francisco. Maiden Lane – a polite reference to the activities that once took place in the early days of the city – ...
Curb Management Strategy
Curb Management Strategy By Tom Maguire When people talk about transportation, we usually focus on traditional traffic engineering tools like traffic signals and bike lanes that can move people through the city. However, what happens at the curb can be just as important to the safe operation of our streets and the health of small businesses in our city. San Francisco has long been at the forefront of managing our curbs, but we have traditionally focused on parking. Our residential permit parking program, established in the 1970s, was one of the country’s first, and in 2011 we implemented the ground-breaking demand-responsive meter pricing program, helping people find a space near their destination. Both of these programs have been adopted by other cities across the country to help manage demand for parking. However, vehicle parking is just one use of the curb, and it’s not always the most efficient or effective at achieving our larger goals. For decades, the SFMTA Color Curb Progr...
