June 10 Muni Service Changes Adds Service on Connector Routes By Clive Tsuma The 38R Geary Rapid will run every 6 minutes starting June 10 Starting Saturday, June 10, the SFMTA will be adding Muni service on several lines to address crowding, wait times and to support increased summer tourism. We’re also making some stop changes to serve more customers and make the service more accessible and reliable. Increased Service To address crowding and reduce pass-ups, we’re adding service on the 1 California between Clay and Drumm streets and California Street and Presidio Avenue – where demand is highest – on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We’re also going to be starting service earlier on the 1X California Express, at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., in response to customer feedback, as well as adding stops at Cherry, Spruce and Laurel streets and Presidio Avenue. We’re also extending the evening service to the Presidio at 30 Stockton seven days a week. The l...

In this week’s Director’s Report from the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Jeffrey Tumlin gave updates on the following topics:
Vision Zero
- It was a challenging year, with an increase in fatalities as compared to the two previous years.
- 29 fatalities were accounted for on city streets in 2019, with pedestrians and seniors disproportionately represented.
- In 2020, the SFMTA will continue our commitment to quick-build projects, including the upcoming Market Street vehicle prohibitions in January.
Transit Update
- Muni experienced major subway disruptions Dec. 7 as a result of surface street flooding from intense rainfall which in turn caused significant subway flooding.
- During this time there was only J and N line service between the Church/Duboce and Embarcadero Station with trains bypassing the Van Ness Station due to standing water on the platforms.
- Bus shuttles were employed while stationary engineers cleared standing water. Normal service resumed by the following morning.
Parking Meter Response
- There was a recent media report about parking meters being out of service in North Beach due to coin blockage. There is merit to the report that is due to two separate ongoing concerns that we are working to resolve.
- We have significant staffing vacancies in the Parking Meter Repair Shop to keep our current inventory in good working order. The good news is that we are in the process of filling staff positions from an eligibility list approved last week.
Muni Art Project
- We’re pleased to be supporting local artists through the Muni Art program for a fifth consecutive year in conjunction with San Francisco Beautiful and the Poetry Society of America.
- Images from local artists who participated in a Muni Art contest earlier in the fall will be displayed in 100 buses around the city beginning next week through April; for the enjoyment of 750,000 Muni riders.
- This year we have five winners who were selected through online voting in August out of a field of 47 entries.
Our Board of Directors meeting is usually held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. To watch the meeting in full, go to SFGovTV.

Central Subway Readies Fare Gates and Ticket Vending Machines
Central Subway Readies Fare Gates and Ticket Vending Machines By Enrique Aguilar In October, crews began installing and testing fare gate and ticket vending machine equipment at new underground stations that hundreds of Muni customers will use to pay for Muni fares once the Central Subway opens next year. In addition to the new equipment being put into place at Chinatown/Rose Pak, Union Square/Market Street and Yerba Buena/Moscone stations, we are also continuing the train testing necessary to help us reach our goal of beginning service in 2022. From the earliest stages of planning, our infrastructure design took into account the need for revenue management equipment like gates and fare machines. Like appliance placement in a brand-new home, architects developed the layout which construction workers build-out of the station’s interior. Crews will secure equipment, connect it to power and data sources and ensure cabling is in the appropriate location based on the station’s floor pla...
Nearly 300 Muni Drivers Celebrated for Extraordinary Safety Record
Nearly 300 Muni Drivers Celebrated for Extraordinary Safety Record By Very few drivers can make the claim they have successfully navigated the congested streets of San Francisco for years on end without having any preventable safety incidents. But 299 of the SFMTA's 2,500 Muni operators can proudly say they have done so for at least 15 years, and some for decades. This month these operators get a token and patch to wear, honoring the Safe Driver record. Recognizing these employees, Director of Transportation Jeff Tumlin stated that, "Safety is SFMTA's number one priority. It is my privilege to honor this year's Safe Driver Award recipients. These professionals deliver for the people of San Francisco and lift up the entire agency. Safe Drivers, thank you for your dedication and your service.” Safe Driver honorees with a remarkable record of 35 or more years. SFMTA Street Changes Improve Safety in the Tenderloin
SFMTA Street Changes Improve Safety in the Tenderloin By Samantha Serafica Protected bike lane and active flex space along the 300 block of Golden Gate Between 2015-2019, the average rate of a person getting hit by a vehicle while walking or biking along the Tenderloin stretch of Golden Gate Avenue and Leavenworth Street was every nine days . The Tenderloin is a densely populated and diverse community located in the heart of San Francisco. It is home to high concentrations of seniors, children, people of color, people experiencing homelessness and people with limited-English proficiency – many of whom live below the poverty line. These groups are most at risk of dying or being severely injured in traffic collisions. Because of these concerns, the SFMTA launched two quick-build projects on Golden Gate Avenue and Leavenworth Street with preliminary design phases in February 2020. Considering their similar traffic calming goals, physical proximity and shared audience, w...
