June 10 Muni Service Changes Adds Service on Connector Routes By Clive Tsuma The 38R Geary Rapid will run every 6 minutes starting June 10 Starting Saturday, June 10, the SFMTA will be adding Muni service on several lines to address crowding, wait times and to support increased summer tourism. We’re also making some stop changes to serve more customers and make the service more accessible and reliable.  Increased Service  To address crowding and reduce pass-ups, we’re adding service on the 1 California between Clay and Drumm streets and California Street and Presidio Avenue – where demand is highest – on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  We’re also going to be starting service earlier on the 1X California Express, at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., in response to customer feedback, as well as adding stops at Cherry, Spruce and Laurel streets and Presidio Avenue.   We’re also extending the evening service to the Presidio at 30 Stockton seven days a week. In this week’s Director’s Report from the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Tom Maguire gave the following updates:

VISION ZERO

  • A pedestrian fatality occurred on Halloween in the late afternoon. A female walking near 19th/South Van Ness was struck by a driver. The San Francisco Police Department is investigating.
  • On Oct. 24, the Board of Supervisors Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee passed an emergency resolution focused on Vision Zero enforcement projects and programs. The resolution, calls for the SFMTA to expand the number of Parking Control Officers to increase enforcement for violations such as stopping in bicycle lanes and double parking, and to increase the number of intersections with red light camera enforcement.
  • With the end of daylight saving time over the weekend and days becoming darker earlier, we know that pedestrian collisions go up 20 percent and even more concerning, collisions between the hour of 6 and 7 p.m. increase by 80 percent. Starting November 3, we have included safety messages on our variable message signs reminding drivers to be extra vigilant at this time of year.

CENTRAL SUBWAY UPDATE

  • We are currently rolling out the next phase of construction mitigation for the Central Subway Project with our partners at the Office of Economic and Workforce Development. It includes grant funding, an advertising campaign and support for local businesses along the alignment.
  • We made the progress we expected over the past month, thanks to new resources from the contractor and remain on track to meet our substantial completion date of June 29, 2020.
  • We are excited to announce that work on the Chinatown Plaza has begun above the new station. This plaza was the community-preferred design and when complete, will be a valuable amenity in the neighborhood.
  • At the Union Square/Market station, crews are working on station finishes and the public art installation – an exciting development as we move closer to completion.
  • To help us stay ahead of potential issues, the team recently completed a comprehensive risk assessment with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

SFMTA RESPONSE TO SONOMA FIRE

  • Many of the nearly 200,000 evacuees from the Kincaid Fire in the North Bay came to San Francisco seeking shelter and services and hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents, including many of our staff, have been impacted by PG&E’s Public Safety Power Shutdown.
  • In response to the extra vehicles on San Francisco streets, the SFMTA parking control group opened extensive parking in the Grace Cathedral area for evacuees, waived parking enforcement fees and provided free Muni passes to our neighbors from the north.
  • I want to recognize the outstanding efforts out our SFMTA colleagues. Muni experienced only minimal impacts to the 81X, 82X, 83X and 88 lines, because our colleagues reported to work despite a variety of challenges.

SFMTA Street Changes Improve Safety in the Tenderloin By Samantha Serafica   Protected bike lane and active flex space along the 300 block of Golden Gate Between 2015-2019, the average rate of a person getting hit by a vehicle while walking or biking along the Tenderloin stretch of Golden Gate Avenue and Leavenworth Street was every nine days . The Tenderloin is a densely populated and diverse community located in the heart of San Francisco. It is home to high concentrations of seniors, children, people of color, people experiencing homelessness and people with limited-English proficiency – many of whom live below the poverty line. These groups are most at risk of dying or being severely injured in traffic collisions. Central Subway Readies Fare Gates and Ticket Vending Machines By Enrique Aguilar In October, crews began installing and testing fare gate and ticket vending machine equipment at new underground stations that hundreds of Muni customers will use to pay for Muni fares once the Central Subway opens next year. In addition to the new equipment being put into place at Chinatown/Rose Pak, Union Square/Market Street and Yerba Buena/Moscone stations, we are also continuing the train testing necessary to help us reach our goal of beginning service in 2022. Making the JFK Drive Promenade a Space for All By Eillie Anzilotti The JFK Drive Promenade is a place for all—and its new signage reflects that!   Starting January 5, 2022 you’ll find new signage all along the promenade route reminding users to be kind, share the space, move slowly, and say hello to each other.   Through over 50 outreach events held by the  Golden Gate Park Access & Safety Program  team throughout the fall and over 10,000 survey responses we received, San Franciscans have overwhelmingly said they appreciate the space for walking and rolling along JFK Drive—but also want to see more guidance on how to use the space.  In response, the SF Recreation & Park Department and SFMTA co-designed this courtesy campaign to encourage park users to put safety and kindness first when navigating the promenade.  A simple reminder to go slow and say hello can go a long way!...
